Our first couple of days in Holhudhoo 🏝
After a 3 hour journey we made it to Holhudhoo. We were greeted by many Little Maids, Guides and Leaders, all dressed very smart. We joined the colour party parade to the school where we each enjoyed gifts and a coconut. We were all very tired after our travelling, so had our dinner and went to bed!
We started the day with a tour of Holhudhoo and got to meet the council who showed us a presentation about the island including the 3 mosques and extra-curricular activities. We then had a tour of the building before moving onto the health centre where we learnt all about their facilities. The health centre is currently in the process of building an extension so they can provide more care options and move up to a level 4 health centre.
We then headed over to the school for our Little Maids session. The session went really well with all the girls happy and eager to join in and take part, full of enthusiasm. Halfway through the session the parents came in to surprise us with a beautiful traditional dance which we joined in with. At the end of the session we enjoyed some kulfi with the girls that their parents had made.
Next we headed to have some lunch before starting the Guides session where they were all eager to join in and support each other as one collective community. In the Guide session, the parents came in with a big fish made from coconut palm leaf and we danced with the girls and their parents. We then continued the session and had lots of fun playing splat and challenging the girls to complete challenges under time pressure, before taking a group photo and heading for short eats.
After short eats we had an afternoon learning all about Maldivian culture and traditions. The girl’s parents and leaders had put lots of effort in to make it a fascinating and informative session. We played some cultural games, and they showed us some of the cultural activities like Bobbi thelhun (grinding of millets), handoo hovun (cleaning rice), huni geynun (scraping coconut), Roanu veshun (making of coir ropes) and fangi vinnun (thatch weaving). This was all shortly followed by a bike tour of the island … just about managing to avoid the rain!!
For the evening we were joined by the Little Maids, Guides and Guiders for a campfire. The Guides and Little Maids performed songs and a play outlining 2 Maldivian folk stories, with the Guiders also giving a performance. The energy, performances and food were all extraordinary and it was a beautiful end to our time in Meyna School. As a team we had so much fun teaching new songs and joining in with the traditional Maldivian dancing! We finished off the evening with a quick Guiders session to share some games they could use in their meetings.
